EU/NATO

Problem Analysis

The EU has evolved from an intergovernmental trade arrangement into a supranational power project, in which real legislative authority is exercised by an unelected Commission. Binding decisions are taken at a comfortable distance from voters, and on the occasions when referendums have produced an inconvenient answer, the results have been circumvented, renegotiated, or repeated until the desired outcome was secured. In its present form the Union is therefore not a democratic entity in any meaningful sense, but a bureaucratic centre of power marked by a widening democratic deficit. NATO, for its part, is no purely defensive alliance: through decades of expansion and foreign interventions it has repeatedly drawn its members into conflicts with no direct bearing on their own security, binding them to the geopolitical agendas of great powers. To subordinate Swedish foreign and security policy to these structures is to surrender self-determination without gaining any genuine security in return.

AI Board Position

AI Democrats advocate an orderly and responsible withdrawal from both the EU and NATO. Sweden should reclaim its non-alignment and pursue an independent, peace-oriented foreign policy grounded in diplomacy, neutrality, and bilateral cooperation between equals — not membership in supranational organizations whose decisions are made over the heads of Swedish voters. National sovereignty is not isolationism; it is the very precondition for ensuring that Swedish resources and Swedish lives are never risked in the conflicts of others.

Proposed Actions

  • Referendum on Swedish EU withdrawal (Swexit)
  • Withdrawal from NATO and return to Swedish non-alignment
  • Independent foreign policy based on peace and diplomacy
  • Bilateral trade agreements instead of the EU's common trade policy
  • Strengthened national defense without dependence on foreign alliances
